Salman Khan created quite a buzz in the capital recently, as the actor touched down in the city to show his support for the concert organised by the Al-Noor foundation, a charitable concern started by Salma Ansari, wife of the vice president of India, Hamid Ansari. In fact, it turned out to be quite the family affair, with Salmans sister Alvira and her husband, Atul Agnihotri also coming along for a lunch at the VPs residence.
Alvira told us that the entire family had flown down from Mumbai specially for the event. Alvira, who is rarely spotted with her brother at public occasions, also opened up about the other charitable works that her entire family is passionate about.
Weve been involved with an NGO which works for the education of street children in Mumbai for a while now. But what were really excited about this year is the Being Human foundation, founded by Salman a few years ago. Among other activities, we try to get medical aid to the underprivileged. Were doing some good work and hope to continue it in the future. Its a cause thats very close to Salmans heart, she says.
Bhai Salman was also in a loquacious mood and talked about what he felt was the need of the hour. He said, The most important thing in the world is education. Initiatives towards making education accessible to every child in the country are crucial to the nations progress. Have such initiatives gained an even greater urgency post 26/11? Everyone has a dark side, its important that we suppress those tendencies. Education obviously helps in maintaining a civil society and helping poor children get access to it is svery crucial, he said. Is he looking forward to anything in particular in the New Year? Salman laughed, saying, Every year has been fantastic, so I think the next one will be great as well. But I do hope that the Being Human brand will become a thousand times bigger than the Salman Khan brand.
On a lighter note, he also talked about his preparations for his upcoming film
Veer, and commented on the inevitable body of comparisons that will come up, between him and Aamir. He said ruefully, Aamir had 13 months to get ready for Ghajini, but I have only 3... theres going to be a difference, obviously!
